British students visit as part of an exchange program

On Thursday, Oct. 2, World Connections Club (WCC) hosted a “Back Chat” for students to meet students and teachers from Billericay, England.

The British group visited on Thursday as part of an exchange program between Fishers and its sister city, Billericay, England. Two students from the Fishers were paired with students at either of the Billericay schools. While in England in July, the Indiana students were able to explore London as well as Billericay and its two secondary schools.

The second annual Back Chat was held in the Annex Cafe and was open to all students in the school. The host students, seniors Amelia Steinmetz and Katie Timmons, shared their experiences from England before the audience was given the opportunity to ask the British students questions regarding their lives and British culture in general.

A common inquiry regarded the differences between the two cities. Billericay School student Harrison Birch found several, aside from driving on the other side of the road and saying certain words differently.

“It’s a lot bigger [here],” Birch said. “It’s also only one building—Billericay has different buildings for each subject. And there are a lot more people here.”

To welcome the students and teachers, WCC presented the guests with Royals-themed gifts, as well as some candies that are difficult to find in England.

While in America, the Billericay guests visited several spots in Indianapolis and Fishers, and spent time at the Renaissance Faire’s Sister Cities tent. They returned to England on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
