Sociology students host mock high school reunion

As part of their Adulthood unit, Nanette Wolfe’s sixth period Sociology class participated in a mock 10-year high school reunion on Wednesday, Nov. 19. The students planned the entire event, which took place during class. Every student was required to join one of four committees: Food, Organization, Decorations or Activities.

“[Going to a high school reunion] is something you’re going to do when you get older,” Wolfe said. “It’s an event where people can learn about all you’ve done in your years since high school, and see that you’re a success now. [Having a mock reunion] is a type of anticipatory socialization; it shows you what the real thing will be like if you decide to go to yours.”

The mock reunion was held in the Media Center Classroom, which students decorated with streamers, balloons, tablecloths and centerpieces to go with the reunion’s Disney theme. The students were required to dress up and role-play according to however they envisioned their lives in 10 years. Junior Emmeline Vasquez decided that she would portray a teacher and author who was married with one daughter.

“[My favorite part was] just seeing how everyone was acting,” Vasquez said. “I liked how they were confident that in 10 years, they will be who they were at the reunion.”
