For two weeks the cast and crew of the 2015 fall play, “The Still Life With Iris,” have stayed everyday after school for hours constructing, rehearsing and creating everything that goes into the play. Each costume was made, some from scratch, and every set piece painted and constructed. With the help of directors Ethan Mathias, Devon Mathias and Mary Armstrong, the production successfully opened on Nov 19.

Each member of the cast, with a few exceptions, were required a ‘past coat’ that represented each character individually and their pasts along with it. Head costume mistress, Sabrina Singh, costumed sophomore Raina Sternke who played the main role of Iris. Through this process Singh hand sewed patches of fabric onto a coat trying to portray the character through this coat. Many other coats were made similarly for characters such as the Flower Painter, Memory Mender, Leaf Monitor, Thunder Bottlers and many more.

The cast consisted of several talented students along with Sternke. Iris was a young girl living with her mother after losing her father as a child. Iris was chosen to be taken to the Great Island which is where the ‘rulers’ lived. These rulers were known as the Goods. When Iris was taken though, her past coat- representing her memory- was taken from her. As the play continues Iris starts to wonder who she is, demanding for answers but never receiving any. Iris takes matters into her own hands and discovers what her life used to be, freeing everyone under the Goods’ rule. Story by Taylor Agraviador. Photos by Keeley Miller.
