Marvel Movie, Logan, May Mark a Shift in Superhero Films

The movie, Logan, comes out today, Friday March, 3 in most theaters in the area. This movie is the second R rated superhero movie that has been put out, following Deadpool that was owned by Fox. This shows a new sense of what it means to make a super hero movie. Whereas previously Marvel made movie that would be appropriate for a younger audiences as well as an older one, now they are targeting their films directly towards adult and older teenage viewers. Interestingly enough, on this day one year ago, Disney, who owns Marvel, announced that they would never make an R rated movie.  “We don’t have any plans to make R-rated Marvel movies,” Disney chairman Bob Iger said. That was March 3, 2016 and now we see Logan getting ready to open in theaters. The use of R rated superhero movies raises questions for viewers. Now, their heroes at times even almost feel like antiheroes, and the films are riddled with themes and content that would not be appropriate for a younger audience. Does this mark a significant change in the superhero film industry? The question really remains if whether or not parents will continue to take young children with them to these movies, and if so, how it will it effect those students. Dr. Goal Auzeen Saedi with Psychology Today wrote an article about how the extensive violence in American films should be causing children and parents great emotional distress to witness, but today’s youth and teens barely bat an eye at the gore because of constant desensitization to violence. (Below I will attach a link to the article). Taking young children to see movies like Deadpool and Logan may effect them in ways rated R labels can not warn parents. Hopefully by marking more violent superhero movies with the rated R or Mature rating will keep young kids out and appropriate viewers in. Story by Makenna Sisemore. Photo from Google Free Use.
