PDA at HSE

PDA is a slang term for Public Displays of Affection. Student couples throughout the school day at HSE express their relationship by holding hands, kissing and hugging in the hallway. However, where should students draw the line and is it a distraction to other students?

According to our school handbook, hand holding, kissing and even hugging are all restricted in our halls. Even though this rule is not implied should school administration enforce these regulations more intently?

After asking a large number of the student body and teachers with different genders and relationship statuses, a conclusion has been made that making out the hallway is distracting and uncomfortable for other students to witness.

“I think that hand holding and hugging in the hallway are acceptable” Freshman Naomi Arroyo said. “However, making out in the hallway can be saved for when the couple is alone.”

After speaking to students who are in a relationship, I saw a pattern between both partners agreeing on what is socially acceptable and what is not.

“I personally believe that if you wouldn’t do it in front of your parents don’t do it at school” Freshman Adam Harper said.

Other students described their biggest problem with the issue is when you are walking behind a couple and they start kissing. Not only is it uncomfortable but also creates a problem for other students to get to class.

While students find that it is not a big deal other students believe that it is distracting and not necessary.   The student body has concluded that a line needs to be drawn where PDA becomes inappropriate at school as well as unnecessary.

“I think that PDA at HSE is too much sometimes. It is okay if a couple is just holding hands but when they are making out in the middle of the hallway it is unnecessary.” Sophomore Katelyn Montalvo said. “Public affection becomes too much when everyone around the couple becomes uncomfortable and grossed out.” Story By: Evelyn Eggers.
