Philosophy Club?

From afar, Philosophy Club may just look like another debate team meeting, but take a closer look and you will see students engaging in profound discussions about ethics and argumentation.  Though it is unlikely to see such conversations in a high school setting, Philosophy club discusses the prevalent topics of the here and now.

We discuss a lot of thought-provoking themes, along with establishing an understanding of current/past philosophies and philosophical movements,” Senior and club president Natalia Morzhova says. “Some topics I am planning include this year is the philosophy of memory interpretation, the importance of art, beauty, and love, egoism/altruism, the role of the government in making decisions, and the perception of language.”

Philosophy club allows students to participate in a club that allows them to find their voice in the crowded halls of HSE. Students can find a safe space to comment on the conversation topics that they would not be able to discuss in the classroom.

Philosophy club is one of those extracurriculars that goes beyond what is taught in class and helps students expand on their own beliefs and think for themselves,” Mortzhova says. “It becomes really interesting to see all of the perspectives and values that each member brings into the discussion, especially when certain subjects are debated.”

But aside from the illuminating discussions, Philosophy Club allows students to create lasting friendships and memories for students to take with them the next time somebody else decides to bring up utilitarianism.
