Falcon and Winter Soldier First Impression

Paityn O'Neill

I personally have loved Marvel for my entire life. I grew up with the movies and then later sort of transitioned into the comics for a little and then back to rewatching and watching the movies. Hearing that shows were now a part of Phase 4 of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), I couldn’t be more excited. I have been tracking the release of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” for weeks and with Bucky Barnes AKA the Winter Soldier, being one of my favorite characters in the MCU, I was super excited for the upcoming show.

My first impression of the first episode was that I liked how the show captured the action that is normally in Marvel movies and how it felt like I was watching a newly released Marvel film. The way it started with Sam Wilson AKA the Falcon going on a combat mission was a perfect way to start the series off, in my opinion.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, we saw Steve Rogers AKA Captain America handing his shield off to Sam. Then, in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier we see Sam going to a ceremony where he is going to give the shield to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum for the Captain America exhibit because he doesn’t feel right keeping it. Personally, this was very upsetting to me. I thought that Steve would give the shield to Bucky who he has known longer and who I thought deserved it. I wasn’t mad that the shield was handed off to Sam because if it wasn’t going to be Bucky that got the shield, I would have wanted it to be Sam. When Sam gave the shield away instead of keeping it like Steve wanted him to, I was very shocked. I thought that Sam would keep it and live up to the legacy that Steve wanted him to, with the shield.

We then get to see Bucky and how he is trying to deal with everything that has happen while he was with Hydra and we get to sort of see how he is dealing with everything happening with Steve. It was really heartwarming to see Bucky working through everything in therapy and I was really happy for him.

I was a little confused why Bucky and Sam didn’t meet up in the first episode and why we didn’t find out what happened to Steve. The worst part of the entire episode that made me very mad was that they replaced Captain America. They not only left us off on a cliffhanger when they first show the new Captain America, but they also give us no explanation as to why. We had to wait an entire week to find out who this new character is and why he was replacing our beloved, Cap.

All in all, I think the show is going to be great. They started off strong and we get a good idea of what’s to come. I am sure that we will have all of our questions answered soon.
