Spring Sport Season Is Here!

Everybody knows about Track or Baseball, but what about Golf?

Baseball and track, two big sports celebrated every year in the United States. Crunching the numbers, using both College and High School statistics, these two sports have 500 million annual viewers, a huge number, 1.5x the whole of the U.S. population in fact! But what about the less popular, but still widely known sports like golf?

Golf has been a recognized High School sport since the 1930’s, beginning in 1937. Although it has been running for 85 years, only 150k High School students participate, compared to the over 500k students who play baseball. So to get some people interested in this not so popular sport, I decided to interview 3 of HSE’s Boys Golf players. The students I interviewed were Nate Benson, a Sophomore, Tyler Marcinko, a Junior, and Lane Zedrick, another Junior.

Both Benson and Zedrick told a story of, “I started playing with my dad” while Marcinko said that, “I played three sports and I wasn’t good enough to go on with two of them, so my dad got me into golf” with inspiration coming froths dad, as well as his own failures. Truly an inspiring story.

When asked about Mr. Young, the head coach, Benson explained, “Mr. Young really helps us keep a level head while playing” and “he really is a great head coach overall” making me believe hat, while he is a teacher of English and the advisor of HSE News, he has a great enjoyment for golf.

Since golf, while being a team sport, has a lot of individuality, I decided to ask Marcinko about how he feels about it. “The other sports like baseball or basketball are pretty much team sports, so with golf, you can really do what you want … and I really like that aspect about it.” Marcinko told a story of why he didn’t like other mainly team sports, but golf was something that he really liked due to the individual aspect of it.

For Zedrick, I asked him about who would be the MVP or Most Valuable Player in golf, “I’ve got to say Tiger, because of the [awards] adn that he is being drafted into the hall of fame” Zedrick said that Tiger Woods, an ashtonishing golfer, and who has been awarded the Presidential Award of Freedom, quite surprising isn’t it?

Now that you’ve heard and read about golf, and the golfers we have at HSE, why don’t you come to tryout for the sport? Tryouts happen on Monday, March 14. See you there!
