Do Something Club promotes anti-discrimination pledge at lunches

This week, the Do Something Club is at lunches at the main campus and the freshman center with an anti-discrimination pledge that students and teachers can sign. The pledge states that the signer will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religion, age, weight/appearance or gender identity, and to respect all staff and students. Those who sign will receive a sticker stating that they signed the pledge.

Principal Matt Kegley is hoping to put the pledge in the student handbook next year, as well as making it an annual event at the beginning of each year. Sophomore Nailah Owens-Johnson, the founder of Do Something Club, came up with the idea for the pledge.

“Although it is not seen as much in school, [discrimination] is definitely a problem outside of school,” Johnson said. “With all the issues coming up in the world, I wanted to do something about it in our school.”

Johnson began planning the club in late 2014, and started it earlier this year. So far the club has raised $130 for the Humane Society and have created Valentine’s Day cards for the elderly.

“I have always wanted to change the world, but I have learned it takes baby steps,” Johnson said. “This is why my first step has been creating this club. Seeing the changes that this club has already made motivates me to continue. I look forward to the future of this club.”
