Club Sports

In the shadow of school sports are the club sports. Club sports are the off-campus sports that offer an activity for students without having to try out. The spring club sports include boys and girls rugby, lacrosse and men’s volleyball.

“I love being able to bring in new pONLINEdannyeople. The program is set up well to teach kids who have never touched a volleyball before how to play,” junior Graham Palin said.

Students tend to have mixed feelings about club sports.

“I like how being a club sport allows us to feel like we have some space between us and the school,” boys rugby player Casey Hays said. “Sometimes it’s good to not be too wrapped up into the school, because you get that feeling of individuality that can be a pleasure.

“The practices are held at different locations which could create potential problems,” senior LeeAnna Davidson said. “It creates struggles because if someone is unable to find transportation, then they might have to miss a practice, which will prevent them from playing the next game and the team can’t work together if people are absent.”ONLINEBL

Coaches encounter separate difficulties, like getting a larger range of talent. Practices must accommodate all skill levels, leading to a range of timing and drills the teams participate in.

“You tend to have to cater to both high and low talent to make sure I’m improving the high talent but not causing the low talent to get lost and frustrated,” JV girls lacrosse coach Rex Holliday said.

However, players found positives within their team that they believe they would not have if it was a school sport. This includes the fact that anyONLINE12 rugbyONLINEelione can join. Many school sports have rigorous try out processes that do not take players that they do not believe are skilled enough for HSE.

“I think it’s a good thing because anyone can start lacrosse. It’s a sport where a first year player can have a good experience even if they have never picked up a stick before,” junior Tyler Gardner said.  “This attracts new players to the sport and allows us to grow as a team.”

Students find a positive in the attitude of the players and why they participate.

“Club teams differ from school teams by the attendance and the people who come out to play,” junior Claire Coyle said. “We do get benefits from being a club sport because it’s more of a choice for people to join.”
