HSE crackdown on construction sites in Newcastle.

Work was halted on construction sites in Newcastle last week as part of a HSE crackdown on unsafe practices.

Inspectors visited 24 contractors engaged on refurbishment sites in the city and served four prohibition notices, effectively stopping work due to concerns about working at height and electrical issues.

Worker suffers serious burns in Greenwich factory incident

HSE is warning companies to ensure maintenance work is carried out safely after a welder suffered serious burns in an incident at the factory formerly operated by Tate & Lyle UK Ltd, now Syral UK Ltd, at Tunnel Avenue, Greenwich, on 12 May 2005.

Burntwood company fined £7,000 after employee suffers crushed fingers

Employers are being warned by the HSE to ensure they assess workplace risks properly and inspect moving machinery to ensure that it has adequate safeguards. This follows HSE’s prosecution of a Burntwood engineering company after one of its employees had the tops of four fingers crushed by unguarded parts of a 60-ton power press.

Shell UK oil products Ltd fined £266,681

Shell UK Oil Products Limited had a ‘narrow escape’ after 20 tonnes of a highly flammable and toxic gas escaped through a corroded pipe at their Stanlow Manufacturing Complex, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, but dispersed without exploding.

Mock court trial of a director

Unacceptable performance by refurbishment sector of the construction industry

“Over one in three construction sites visited put the lives of workers at risk and operated so far below the acceptable standard that our inspectors served 395 enforcement notices and stopped work on 30% of the sites”, Geoffrey Podger, HSE’s Chief Executive said today.

This comes after HSE carried out over 1000 spot checks of refurbishment sites across Great Britain during February.

Newport event to give advice to transport firms on moving goods safely

From forklift trucks to articulated lorries - transport in the workplace can pose a risk to employees and the public. Next month, HSE will be holding free events at Corus’ Llanwern site in Newport, aimed at offering advice to haulage and distribution companies on managing this risk.

Corporate manslaughter under spotlight at Cardiff event

The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 comes into force on 6 April 2008, and to help raise awareness of employers’ responsibilities under the new legislation, the South Wales Working Well Together Group (WWT) is holding a mock “interview under caution” event in Cardiff next month.

HSE warns construction companies over trainee supervision

HSE reminds companies to ensure that they pay attention to trainees’ health and safety needs and that they are supervised properly. The warning comes after three companies and a manager were fined a total of £217,500 plus £125,000 costs for breaching health and safety law, following the death of a 17-year-old trainee scaffolder.

1000 spot checks of refurbishment sites across Great Britain

Last year over half of the workers who died on construction sites worked in refurbishment, and the number of deaths on refurbishment sites rose by 61%. HSE announced that throughout February it aims to inspect 1000 refurbishment sites across Great Britain, to tackle poor safety standards.

Scrapyard worker is killed and employer is fined £200,000
