HSE has notified bidders for the new gas installer registration scheme that it is awarding the contract to Capita Group Plc (CAPITA). The contract, which is valued at £14 million per annum, is awarded for a term of ten years and will be signed on 8th September 2008.

Trader fined for illegal gas work

HSE is urging people to only use competent, registered gas fitters when having their boilers and heating systems serviced. This follows a joint investigation by the HSE and Kent County Council’s Trading Standards (KTS) into dangerous work carried out on gas appliances in the homes of elderly people in Kent.

HSE has warned the public in the Shropshire area about potentially unsafe gas installations carried out through a company called “Embers Fires”, following the prosecution of two brothers, one of who operated and ran the business.

HSE names preferred bidder to run new gas installer scheme

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) today announced CAPITA as its preferred bidder in the competition to provide a new gas installer registration scheme in Great Britain. This scheme will replace the one currently operated by CORGI.

The new scheme, which will start in April 2009, is set to bring improved domestic gas safety and benefits to both consumers and gas installers.

HSE warns: Use qualified tradespeople to check your flues

HSE is issuing a warning to the public to have any flued appliance carefully checked and serviced by qualified and competent persons. This follows a prosecution resulting from a report that the elderly occupant of a house in Canwell, Sutton Coldfield was suffering from symptoms similar to those of Carbon Monoxide poisoning. The investigation found incorrect installation work had been done.

Investigating major gas incidents - guidance updated

The semi-permanent circular provides a ‘first response’ guide when arriving on site and how to go about starting the investigation. It also complements existing guidance contained in the Major Incident Operational Procedure. This guidance is primarily intended for Inspectors from HID’s Specialised Industries Division Gas & Pipelines Unit (SI3). However, Inspectors from other HID Chemical Industry Units may be called on to provide an initial response.
