German Club hosts Oktoberfest celebration

Oktoberfest, a famous festival in Germany, is typically celebrated from the end of September to the beginning of October. German Club held its own celebration during its meeting on Monday, Oct. 6. This day because it marks German-American Day in the United States.

Club sponsor Nichole Mathews holds the celebration for members each year to help them learn more about the cultural aspects of Germany.

“There used to be a Spanish Club and a French Club, but those have kind of morphed with World Connections [Club],” Mathews said. “I think it’s good to have a club where kids can focus on the German stuff. People seem to really enjoy it, especially the field trips. We go to Chicago [and] see the Anthenæum.”

The club’s Oktoberfest celebration included pretzels—a traditional Oktoberfest treat—and a quick German dance lesson by a performer from an Indianapolis dance troupe. German Club press representative Madison Schafer cites the dancing as her favorite aspect of the celebration.

“It’s really fun, especially when people don’t really know each other and you get to meet people,” Schafer said. “This is one of our first meetings, and it’s neat to be able to do a cultural thing.”
