NHS and Interact Club members volunteer at Octoboo

On Tuesday, Oct. 28, students from National Honor Society (NHS) and Interact Club volunteered at the Hamilton East Public Library’s annual Octoboo celebration. The event was open to children of all ages, and offered multiple Halloween-themed activities, including crafts, storytelling, games and food decorating.

Before the event began, members of both clubs assisted with setting up the numerous games and snacked on pizza provided by the library. Once the families began to arrive, students assisted with all the activities and supervised the games and booths. Some even donned costumes to embrace the Halloween spirit, and passed out candy to the children.

Though she did not dress up, junior Bailey Coleman enjoyed seeing the variety of characters the trick-or-treaters portrayed.

“[My favorite part] was seeing all the kids in costume and seeing how excited they were to make the crafts,” Coleman said.

Both clubs participated in this volunteer opportunity in years past, but this was Coleman’s first time working at Octoboo with NHS.

“I like Halloween—it’s one of my favorite holidays,” Coleman said. “I also like working with kids, so I thought it’d be a fun event because I could make this holiday more fun for kids.”
