We the People team wins District Competition

On Monday, Nov. 3, the We the People team competed in the District Competition. Although this year’s competition took place nearly two weeks earlier than last year’s, allowing less time to prepare, the team succeeded and will move on to state finals in December.

“It’s been pretty stressful, but I think the pressure helps us focus more,” We the People Unit 1 member and senior Ari Meza said. “[At the District Competition] we got to show off what we’ve learned. We put a lot of emphasis on learning to be active and educated citizens, as well as presenting well-formulated thoughts. So I liked getting to watch other Units, too, because we’ve come a long way and learned a lot.”

Meza notes that his Unit won the Unit 1 award, and the team won the entire District Competition. As of now, they will be the only ones to represent the HSE district at State. Though they only faced two competitors, including Fishers High School, the competition was not easy.

“The hard part is thinking on your feet. The judges sometimes ask really odd questions, and you have to rely on past knowledge to answer,” Meza said. “But it’s still really fun. We the People rocks!”
