Golden Globe Grievances

Award season is finally upon us, and while everyone awaits the Oscar nominations to be announced, the Golden Globe nominations have just recently been revealed. I couldn’t disagree with them more.

Interstellar, one of the biggest movies of the year, featuring the work of esteemed director Christopher Nolan and actors such as Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Matt Damon (all Oscar nominees and/or winners), is only nominated for Best Original Score. The film currently has held a rating of 8.9 out of 10 on IMBb for weeks, putting it in the top twenty movies of all time, and has a 73 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, it is not being awarded for its work. Surely when the Oscars ceremony comes around, it will be more prominent. This all makes me question the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s film critic skills.

Next on my list grievances is Gone Girl. Gone Girl has been nominated for Best Director, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Surely it’s a best picture nomination, too, right? Wrong. Apparently, a film that potentially has the best writing, actress, directing, and score of the year is not one of the best films of the year.

One of my biggest problems with the Golden Globes lies is how they separate movies into different categories. It is ridiculous that a film like Birdman, a deep analysis of self-absorption which has an 8.7 on IMDb and a metascore rating of 89, is up against the family blockbuster Into the Woods. The “Best Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy” category has been stripping films of the true praise they deserve for years. Last year, Leonardo Dicaprio made a good point of how absurd the category is, saying “Thanks to my fellow comedians Christian Bale, Joaquin Phoenix, and Oscar Isaac,” in his acceptance speech after winning the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture: Comedy or Musical.

Though I may sound too critical of the Golden Globes, I agree with some of their decisions. After seeing The Theory of Everything, I knew Eddie Redmayne deserved an award for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking, and lo and behold, he was nominated. I expect he will see his first major award soon. Also, I’d have to say Birdman and Gone Girl have featured some of the best writing I’ve seen in a film in a while, so I’m glad to see it in the Best Screenplay category.

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinions, especially when it comes to movies. Just remember that they aren’t always right. I’m looking at you, Golden Globes.
