Q&A with student film directors Nick Kinder and Bryce Reif

Q%26A+with+student+film+directors+Nick+Kinder+and+Bryce+Reif

Question: How far along in the filming process are you right now?

NK: From the final product, not just filming but edited too? I’d say 20 percent. We have three or four hours of footage. Our biggest scenes, we haven’t filmed yet. We have a lot of small stuff that will turn out to be maybe a minute, edited. The thing is, we’re going to finish it, and it’s going to be beautiful.

Q: Once you finish filming and editing, what’s your ultimate goal with this film?

BR: Just to make a movie, honestly. Mr. Follis talks a lot about taking it to film festivals, which I totally want to do. But all I really want to do is be able to say I made a movie, and I had the ability to work with other people to make a movie, not just make one on my own. Also, I want to get an IMDb page.

NK: I agree with Bryce, but I also want to absolutely blow everyone away. Because, on the surface, a high school movie sounds awful, it sounds mediocre, it sounds immature. That’s what people expect when you hear “high school movie.” And with this, we have the resources, we have the time, we have the talent. Put all those together, and we’re going to blow people away. At least, that’s what I hope to do.

Q: How important would film festivals be to you guys?

BR: I mean, to me, not really. I definitely want to go to them. Just to have the experience of having one of my own movies in a film festival would be super cool. And winning one would be incredible, just, like Nick said, to blow people away. It would be proof. But if we don’t, this is just a good experience for me.

NK: Film festivals also get your name out. Especially if you win—then you have a starting point for the real film business.

BR: We both want to go into film, so that’s a pretty big deal.

NK: Right, this is like a jump start for our careers. But first things first; we’re not focused on film festivals, we’re not making this film for a film festival. We’re making this movie because we love filmmaking.

BR: We’re not doing this because people want us to finish the movie, but because we really want to make a movie. This sounds conceited, but we’re doing this for ourselves, and for the experience, because it’s what we love to do.

N: And being able to share that to an audience is awesome.

Q: What has been the best part of this experience?

BR: Getting to spend time with Nick… No, no, there have been a lot of great parts to it. Like, casting was so much fun. It was cool, being on that side of it. And every day of filming, something great happens. Honestly.

NK: I wouldn’t trade filming for anything in the world, because it’s amazing.

BR: We get to do what we love to do, which is cinematography. We get to take the vision that we have and put it into a different medium.
