Study Tips

With finals this week, many students are cramming last minute. The following tips can be used for those seeking a little more direction when it comes to studying.

  1. Space It Out: When studying, it is better to study materials in chunks, rather than all at once. Take breaks in between sections in order to maximize concentration.
  2. Write It Out: Studies have shown that students memorize information better when they handwrite it instead of type. Try to write out definitions for vocabulary instead of just reading it from a textbook.
  3. Reward Yourself: Once you have mastered a section, give yourself a treat. It can be a few minutes on Twitter, a holiday cookie or something else you would like. This will help with procrastination and knowing there is a small reward at the end can make studying more enjoyable.
  4. Stay Away From Distractions: Try to avoid social media, TV or anything else that could interrupt your concentration while studying. Having your phone buzz next will only distraction from your textbook and study guides. Focus your attention on the materials you are studying.
  5. Drink Caffeine: Studies show that caffeine not only helps you stay awake, but it also will help you when studying. It will keep you alert and feel not quite as tired, doing a task that most find boring.
