Out of the Classroom

Out+of+the+Classroom

On March 8, 2017, AP Literature and Composition students took a field trip to the Hamilton 16 IMAX in Hamilton Town Center to see “Hidden Figures”. Students are currently reading “The Invisible Man”, and this book correlated with the film.

“The correlation between the book and the movie is that they both involve individuals who are outcasts in society,” junior Lily Colbert said. “The book and movie also involve similar struggles [for the characters]”.

To some students, a change in learning environment helped them understand concepts, rather than being stationary in a classroom.

“Even just the fresh air and new scenery can really open you up to new ideas,” junior Jack Reynolds said. “I like having a mix of teaching methods. Day-to-day routine gets repetitive and boring, like white noise on the radio. Even just walking around outside clears my head.”

Seeing the movie helped with some student’s understanding of the b0ok.

“[The movie] really allowed us to relate events from the past with something more familiar,” Reynolds said. “The movie covered ‘hidden figures’, in the sense of people behind great accomplishments. The thematic elements related to ‘Invisible Man’, which shares clear themes just by looking at the titles.”

While some students not only enjoyed getting out of the classroom, some also enjoyed the film itself.

“I liked the movie because it was a powerful message,” Colbert said. “Anyone can do anything if they put their minds to it.”
