The Past, The Present of Summer Songs

As summer 2017 approaches, a group of students  have begun to anticipate the summer months more and more. In a survey taken at HSE, most of the students agreed that there is generally a “summer song” every year. This is a song that is most popular during the summer months and may define a summer for a few students. For example, in 2012  all students agreed that the song of that summer was Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen. This song may not be know as the “summer song” for all students but overall students agree that is was the most popular.

“I very much dislike this song,” stated Joel Tsetse. “But if I had to say that it reminded my of a season it would definitely be summer.”

Some students disagree with the idea that there may be a summer song at all due to their personal preference of music genre.

“I think a person’s idea of a summer song all depends on the genre of music they listen to,” stated Mackenzie Barclay. “If someone listens to more alternative types of music, they may not necessarily think a song in the pop top 40’s is the summer song of that year because they might not like it. Ultimately, I just think it’s up to each individual person to decide what their specific summer song is.”

Last summer, a group of students agreed on two songs. These songs were One Dance by Drake and This Is What You Came For by Calvin Harris and Rihanna.  Although it is only the start of May with 4 weeks till summer, predictions for songs in 2017 are already taking place. In the survey that took place, students voted HUMBLE. by Kendrick Lamar and Something Just Like This by Coldplay featuring The Chainsmokers as possible songs for summer 2017.

“I think it will be the summer song,” stated Brooklyn Seagrave. “Because it’s catchy and has a chill beat.”
