Turning Hobbies into Passion

Turning+Hobbies+into+Passion

Seniors, Paul Novosel and Jake Ledford started out making class projects through film and turned it into something bigger. They made a few trailers and uploaded them to their YouTube channel and they realized this was not only a hobby, but a passion. They grew from their YouTube channel and created a Twitter, Facebook, website and business cards. Thus, creating PJ Productions.

“We started with school projects and then realized we wanted to make actual films,” Novosel said. “We wanted to do stuff with special effects.”

Novosel and Ledford specialize in graphics and editing. They use tools such as; Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop. Their specialty is short action trailers. Their most popular trailer, Superhuman, started filming in the summer of 2016 and was released February of 2017. This trailer shows off their use of graphics and editing.

Superhuman was a test to see if we could do special effects,” Novosel said. “It was how we got running with it.”

They want to begin making more short films instead of trailers. They are currently in the works for a short film called The Last 500. This short film is about a futuristic society where freedom of speech has been taken away. The main character of the film, Quinn Genti, threatens a government official on social media and receives an unthinkable punishment. She is only able to speak with a device that allows 500 words before her vocal abilities vanish.

“We always ended up being in the same classes together,” Ledford said. “I just found cool apps to work with on our projects and wanted to do more.”

They mutually decided to take their work further. After their school projects, Le Rapport and The Importance of Being Earnest Trailer, they both wanted to try out special effects and see what they could do with it. They ended up being in the same class and always paired up on school projects.

“We set up our Instagram account as a business account,” Novosel said. “We bought ads and it helped us reached to about a thousand people.”

The boys eagerly want to start reaching out to a bigger audience and making this a serious thing. With hard work and practice, they are branding themselves to be greater and more well-known.

“We want to start going to film festivals,” Ledford said. “Maybe we will expand and become a huge empire one day.”
