What to Know About Robotics Club

Over the course of the year, students in Robotics Club will design, build, code and test their own robots in competitions. The club offers several other takeaways besides the technical skills that are taught.

“Robotics has made me part of a community in our school,” senior Sara White said. “It has taught me a lot about teamwork and time management as well as building and programming.”

Having been a part of Robotics since her sophomore year, the club has connected White with other students and staff members who share similar interests.

“Robotics has helped me create lasting friendships,” White said. “It has also allowed me to build closer relationships with the engineering teachers.”

Throughout the year, the robots are tested in a variety of competitions. While the majority of the students prefer to compete only with others in the club, some students choose to compete with outside of the school. These students have the option to compete in the Vex Robotics Competition, which hosted over ten thousand teams from thirty-two countries last year.

“The competitions go so fast. They’re a blur, but they are a lot of fun,” White said. “It’s fun to see how your build stacks up against others and it’s really neat to see what other people are creating.”

Whether students are willing to go as far as competing outside of the school or not, members are rewarded for any level of dedication they put into the club.

“Robotics rewards me with a great group of teammates and friends who share a love of engineering and competition,” White said. “We also gain a lot of knowledge on different elements of design and construction.”

Club membership requires no previous experience, but it is suggested for students joining teams that compete outside of school. The club still offers opportunities for students who cannot be active at the club for the entire year, whether that be for seasonal sports or any other reason the weekly meetings cannot be attended. Students interested to join are encouraged to attend the second call out meeting on Aug. 31 in room B165.
