Pasta Bowl Q&A

Each year during Mudsock week FFA and Key Club put together an event called the Pasta Bowl. This year the event is between September 1st-8th. We decided to do a Q&A with the senior president of FFA Emma Swain and senior historian of Key Club Sarah Palagy to answer a few questions about the event.

Q: What is the Pasta Bowl?

Emma Swain: “The pasta bowl is a food drive to collect pasta for Hamilton County food banks. It is important right now because a lot of the food banks are low on food coming back from summer. With school starting up they don’t have as much food right now so this is going carry them over into the holiday season and into fall. Also, I don’t think many people donate pasta.”

Q: Why do we do the Pasta Bowl?

Sarah Palagy: “We have canned food drives and other things later on in the year but now is a really good time to collect food because a lot of time people think giving food is only for Thanksgiving and Christmas. People forget that we aren’t just in need during those holidays, people need food all the time.”

Q: Why is it called the Pasta Bowl?

Sarah Palagy: “The name “Pasta Bowl” actually comes from Meijer who started the program. HSE picked up the name and called it the ‘Mudsock Pasta Bowl’ because of its proximity to the Mudsock football”

Emma Swain: “It’s called the Pasta Bowl because it’s a competition between HSE and Fishers so it’s supposed to simulate the super bowl. Kind of like the best of two coming together for a good cause.”

Q: “Why do you do the pasta bowl during Mudsock week?

Emma Swain: “It’s intended to be during Mudsock week. It always correlates with that week because it’s rivalry week and all the other sports are playing Fishers so it gets everyone more excited and more motivated to just beat Fishers at one more thing. If we say we can beat them in the Pasta Bowl it means so much more in my opinion. Especially if we don’t beat them in the football game, at least we won in the Pasta Bowl and that helps people in the community.”

Q: How can students donate?

Sarah Palagy: “We are collecting Pasta from September 1st-8th and kids can bring in pasta to their first period classes. We are asking for dry pasta only and no sauce or other condiments you put on pasta.”

Emma Swain: “Okay so students just have to bring in pasta. They can bring in as much as they want of any pasta that you want. and you bring it to your first-period class and then the teachers count how much they have and the first period class with the most gets a prize. So it’s a competition between each class and Fishers.”

Q: If a student isn’t in a first period can they still donate and how?

Sarah Palagy: “We collect the pasta in the commons area under the stairs so you can put it there. Or you can talk to a teacher and maybe give it to them and help their first period class win as well.”

Q: Do classes get a prize for donating the most food?

Sarah Palagy: “This year we are doing a breakfast party for the first period class who donates the most pasta. After we collect all the food and count it we will announce the winner and that first period class will get donuts.”

Q: How did FFA get involved in the Pasta Bowl?

Emma Swain: “Last year we started to co-sponsor the pasta bowl, we collect the pasta and promote it with Key Club. We got involved with the Pasta Bowl because Key Club lost a sponsor and one of our goals for last year was to get more involved in things so helping in the Pasta Bowl fulfilled our goal of helping out in the school and in the community.”
