Matt Lauer Fired by NBC After Sexual Harassment Allegation

The Today show’s leading anchor, Matt Lauer, was fired by NBC Nov. 29 following a sexual misconduct allegation. Lauer’s former co-host, Savannah Guthrie, announced the news at the top of Wednesday’s show, accompanied by fellow anchor Hoda Kotb.

“On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer,” NBC News Chairman Andy Lack said in a statement regarding NBC’s decision to fire Lauer. “It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards.”

Lauer had worked at NBC for over 20 years, starting his career with the Today show in 1998. In his statement, Lauer also said that “it is the first complaint about [Lauer’s] behavior in the over twenty years he’s been at NBC News.”

Lauer broke his silence Thursday morning through a statement read on Thursday mornings show.

“There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions,” Lauer said. “To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC.”

Lauer partially denied some of the reports made against him but did confirm parts.

“Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed,” Lauer said. “I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly.”

Following Lauer’s termination, the New York Times reported that two other women came forward and made complaints about Lauer. NBC also confirmed that two more accusers came forward Wednesday.

Starting Wednesday’s show, Lauer’s former co-host Savannah Guthrie commented on the situation.

“I’m heartbroken for Matt,” Guthrie said. “He is my dear, dear friend and my partner. And he is beloved by many, many people here.”
