Movie Review: A Quiet Place

April 6, “A Quiet Place” graced the silver screen. In the horror-thriller, directed by John Krasinski, the audience follows a mother, played by Emily Blunt, father, played by director Krasinski and their children as they live in a post-apocalyptic world where making any sound is detrimental. The family has to modify the way they live to produce little to no sound in order to survive against the creatures that will eliminate anything that makes a sound.

Director Krasinski brilliantly guides the audience into situations where they can expect sound to come, whether it be a shotgun, a timer or an exposed nail in the floor. These situations are presented subtly, however, they successfully produce an overwhelming amount of tension that is warranted. The movie did not need to rely on cheap horror movie theatrics which is what made it very enjoyable. Simple things in our everyday lives could lead to instantaneous death in the film so the sight of objects that the audience very well knows will produce sound causes immense stress. This feeling is prevalent throughout the entirety and surprisingly made it tremendously entertaining.

Because the characters cannot make a sound, the film relies on visual storytelling. Director Krasinski introduces the audience to a side of him that was overall unexpected. Those who are familiar with John Krasinski remember him as Jim Halpert from “The Office” and knowing he directed a film as horrifying and emotionally taxing as “A Quiet Place” is quite opposite to the comedic, light-hearted character he portrayed for years.

“A Quiet Place” contained a perfect balance of scares, especially in scenes with emotional challenges, and the post-apocalyptic world the characters live in. The movie was less about the creatures that the family feared but more of the closeness of a family. At the core of the movie, it shows what a father would do to protect his family.
