How One Woman is Changing the World

Sarah McBride, a transgender rights activist from Wilmington, Del., is making waves across the nation. The 27-year-old, an alumnus from American University in Washington, D.C., has just recently released a memoir titled, “Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and The Fight For Trans Equality”, which includes a foreword from former Vice President, Joe Biden. Six years into living her authentic truth, however, McBride’s memoir is not her only step towards a career in political activism.

“As a young person first gaining a fuller perspective on the size of the world, the scope of social change I read about fascinated me,” Mcbride said.

From a young age, McBride became heavily intrigued by politics and how they affect our world, studying presidents, the White House and her local politicians in Delaware. During her teenage years, she followed along on the campaign trail for Jack Markell,  going so far as to later introduce him before the Democratic National Convention.

“She was honest and heartfelt,” Biden said. “Even at that young age, she was a leader.”

Following her work on Markell’s campaign, while attending American University, McBride held the position of Student Body President and worked also as a part of the school’s student government. Soon after her coming out via AU’s newspaper, as well as her graduation, McBride joined the White House staff as part of the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs – specifically focused on LGBTQ+ issues.

“She was just out of college and she had already changed the world,” Biden said.

The memoir McBride has given the world has not only acted as a form of an outlet for her own life and personal story but also as an informative piece to educate and open the minds of readers. As Mcbride continues her career as an activist for LGBTQ+ and transgender rights, it can be seen in her memoir what one of her main pulls is when it comes to why she does what she does.

“We are fighting to be seen in our personhood, in our worth, in our love, and as ourselves,” Mcbride said.

Through seeing Mcbride’s work through activism prior to her coming out, it can be easily stated that she will be one to truly change the course of the world.
