From Player to Manager

Scotlyn Mieling has played volleyball for much of her life. Her parents introduced her to the sport when she was in 4th grade. She loved the game. But it wasn’t until 6th grade when she started to get competitive. For many years she enjoyed playing volleyball. She played every position at some point in her career, and she excelled at it.

After her sophomore season of school volleyball, she dealt with some injuries and had a few bad experiences with some coaches in club volleyball, which led her to quit playing. She was very upset because her love of playing the game competitively slowly faded away. Although she no longer played, she still wanted to be involved in volleyball some way. One of her friends recommended that she become a manager for the men’s volleyball team.

During her Sophomore year, she decided to give it a shot and she loved it. Managing for the men’s volleyball team reignited her spark and brought back the love for the game. Mieling said, “The guys on the team are great to be around and they really make me feel a part of the team.” Despite the men’s volleyball team having rough seasons and losing records, Mieling still enjoyed managing. And the team loved to have her. One of the players, Zach Marden, said, “Scotlyn is a very important part of this team. She helps coach us and she does so much for us that often goes unrecognized.”

Mieling has always had a passion for volleyball and she fulfilled that passion in many ways. Whether it was playing, coaching, or managing, she always excelled in her position and she loved every minute of it.
