Academy nominated actor Elliot Page came out as transgender via his social media platforms. The actor is best known for his work starring in 2007’s Juno and Netflix’s Original TV show The Umbrella Academy.

“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans,” Page announced. “My pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot.”

Support from thousands of friends, family and fans flooded social media, websites and streaming servers further spread messages of support by changing his name and pronouns.

In Page’s post, he explained that they use both he/him pronouns and they/them pronouns, describing himself as transgender and non-binary which means he does not identify as a man nor a woman.

“Elliot Page has given us fantastic characters on-screen and has been an outspoken advocate for all LGBTQ people,” GLAAD’s Director of Transgender Media Nick Adams said. “He will now be an inspiration to countless trans and non-binary people. All transgender people deserve the chance to be themselves and to be accepted for who we are. We celebrate the remarkable Elliot Page today.”

Prior to coming out as transgender Elliot Page has been in Hollywood’s spotlight as one of the most visible LGBT actors, coming out as a gay during a speech at the 2014 Human Rights Campaign’s ‘Time to Thrive’. Page remains a role model for LGBT youth by staying proud of who they are and advocating for LGBT rights.

The Human Rights Campaign dedicates itself to ensure that all LGBTQ people across the nation and world are treated as full and equal citizens.

In the words of Page’s character, Vanya Hargreeves from The Umbrella Academy, “Who I am is not a disease.” Story by Kathryn Collins.
