Swimming in Money

Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys agree on new contract terms

Four years, 160 million dollars. 126 million guaranteed. Capped off with an NFL record 66 million dollar signing bonus. The numbers for Dak Prescott’s new contract are mind-numbing to the average person, and it seems to give the Cowboys a fresh start for the upcoming season.

For the past 3 offseasons, Prescott and the Cowboys have gone through hours of negotiation to work out a new contract for the star QB. The cowboys wanted Dak in Dallas, and Dak wanted to stay in Dallas, so what took so long? Well, in 2020, the cowboys signed WR Amari Cooper to a 5-year, $100 million contract, and in 2019, signed RB Ezekiel Elliot for 6 years and $90 million. Money seemed to be tight in Dallas, and with the Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes signing a $450 million extension, Prescott wanted his contract to be up there as well.

The past few decades have been rough for the Cowboys, when it comes to find a winning QB. Tony Romo seemed to be the savior in Dallas in 2006, but in his 14 years, he never led the team to the NFC championship. Every single year, they either did not make the playoffs, lost in the wild card round, or lost in the divisional round. When Romo retired was nearing retirement in 2015, Dallas looked to the 2016 NFL Draft to find their new guy.

Dak Prescott was taken by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the draft and was selected to learn from Romo and soon take over the starting job. In the 2016 preseason, Romo came down with an injury, and it was Dak’s time to shine. Prescott went on to lead Dallas to a 13-3 season and win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Dak has been quite successful at Dallas, except for an 8-8 season in 2019. For this past year, the Cowboys finished 6-10 following Dak’s season-ending injury that included a compound fracture in his right leg and a dislocation of his right ankle.

Long story short, it is now 2021 and Dak Prescott is swimming in money with his new contract. The Cowboys’ head coach, Mike McCarthy, will be going into the second year of his contract with Dallas, and things are looking bright for the future of America’s team. Prescott will be healed and looking for revenge on the league in the upcoming season. Story by Lee Cook
