On March 7th, 2021 one of the most talked about interviews aired, shocking much of the world. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, Duchess and Duke of Sussex, sat down in an emotional interview with Oprah Winfrey where the two discussed the hardships of being apart of the Royal Family.

A main talking point in the interview was Meghan expressing to Oprah how badly her mental health had been affected.  She shared that at one point it was so bad that she had contemplated taking her own life. This was baffling to many people and since the interview many comments have been made about this. However, although a very personal fact, Markle explained in the interview why she chose to share this.

“I share this because there’s so many people who are afraid to voice that they need help,” Markle said. “And I know personally how hard it is to—not just hard it is but when your voice is silenced, to be told no…This was emails, begging for help, saying very specifically I am concerned for my mental welfare…Nothing was ever done. So we had to find a solution.”

The weeks following the interview, social media has been non-stop analyzing. Many have even compared it to Princess Diana’s interview about her mental health nearly 25 years before. With two people now on record questioning the  motives of the Royal Family, a fire has been lit that have many people trying to put it out. The following statement was put out a few days following the interview.

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.”

With a newborn on the way, Harry and Meghan plan to put the past behind them now and continue to make a life for themselves apart from the Royal Family.
