Athlete Feature: Reph Stevenson

Basketball player Reph Stevenson discusses his experiences as a senior leader this offseason.

Sweater weather means a lot for the state of Indiana. Crop harvests, High School football reaching the end of the season, and approaching holidays all excite Hoosiers; but nothing compares to the growing anticipation of Indiana High School Basketball. In a state notorious for highly competitive and exciting basketball there is enough pressure on athletes as is but Reph Stevenson has the added expectations of leading the Hamilton Southeastern Basketball team through rigorous offseason training and conditioning.

Heading into his second season with the team, Head Coach John Ashworth is amping up his offseason training program to instill toughness and work ethic in all his players before the season tips off. However a crucial aspect of Ashworth’s wanted culture is active senior leaders helping motivate the team; and as football season rolls on and some members of the team are committed to other sports at the moment this role falls to Stevenson.

Thankfully, he seems to have stepped into the role wonderfully as Ashworth had this to say:

“He has bought into his role as an emotional leader for our group. He does a good job of making sure practices and workouts are intense and that players compete.”

Reph constantly motivates his teammates and stokes competition in order to pursue excellence; and this is exciting news knowing that the Royals showed some flashes of really good basketball from returning players last season. Heading into year 2 of the Ashworth era, there is nothing more exciting than a talented player, and senior, that is taking it upon himself to help lead Royals Basketball down the road to success this fall. Story by Alex Boothby
