Mourning Sarah Everard

After the recent murder of Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old marking executive from the UK, an outpour of social media input has sparked across the world. Women all over have begun speaking out against sexual harassment and assault they have experienced in their own lives.
Everard’s tragic story has been so impactful because it is what every woman fears of. Everard was walking home on the phone with her boyfriend when she was attacked. Everard’s murder became even more disturbing when a police officer was charged with the crime.

At a vigil held to pay respects to Everard on March 13th, London police officers roughly broke up the crowd and photos spread on the internet of officers handcuffing women. This incident has furthered the outrage around Everard’s death.

In days following Everard’s death, many have taken to social media to express the sexism they experience. Whether they knew Everard or not, many women connect with Everard’s story personally because it is the embodiment of the real fear they feel when walking in the dark, being somewhere alone, etc. The world will continue to grieve for Everard, a young woman who was only trying to walk home.
