The Identical Twins of Indiana High Schools

How the two high schools may not get along and think they are very different, but deep down are very similar.

Hamilton Southeastern is a 6A school, a known powerhouse in Central Indiana with almost 4000 students. Home to so many sports teams and members of the HCC conference, it is one of the best conferences in the state of Indiana, and maybe even the Midwest. With all of that being said, a flaw has arisen and the parents and students of HSE have a serious question about one thing, the athletics facilities. With all the fans and alumni that love showing out to high school sporting events, our facilities have been highly talked about needing to be improved as soon as possible. For instance, when it comes to sectional events for sports like basketball and baseball, we can never host because our facilities are not big enough or nice enough to have several schools together in the same area. Schools like Westfield and Noblesville always seem to host these types of events because they have newer facilities and have made advancements to the school. Part of the issue with us waiting and not making any changes is because we are in a contract with Fishers where whatever we do, they would have to follow the same procedures. A deal was made between the two high schools, so all athletic facilities are the same structure and have the same capacity. Since the distance between the 2 high schools is only a grand total of approximately 7 minutes, it seems to be quite unreasonable for one high school to have better and more advanced facilities than the other.

A prime example of this issue is former HSE basketball star and NBA lottery pick Gary Harris is a proud alumni and has always wanted to donate some of his earnings back to his high school. Several times Gary has wanted to donate some of his NBA earnings to the school to help with locker room design, a nicer gym, just better athletic facilities, but just one thing gets in the way of this donation, Fishers High School. Whatever money Gary donates, the pot will have to be split as half will go to HSE and half will go to Fishers. Many instances have come into play with donations to a certain school, but this one is the most valuable as Gary could put in a lot of helpful cash to the school.

A couple summers ago, an addition to both schools was made, and it was made the exact same. Each school decided to build another auxiliary gymnasium, with three courts. This was done because both schools agreed to the deal of adding this gymnasium, if one school wasn’t on board, then this would not have been built.

Overall, as different as these two schools are, they are almost the exact same. When the schools must basically share the ways of how they run things and improve the facilities, that is why it is so difficult to adjust our facilities and better our athletic campus. Over time the schools will decide to make changes, but the schools constantly must make deals about what to do and how to do it is what delays this process heavily.
