The minds behind HSE News attended the JEA/NSPA Fall Convention held at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis Friday, Nov. 11 to Saturday, Nov. 12 of this past week. The broadcasting and publications staffs that produce the school’s HSE TV, Sceptre yearbook and Orb newspaper spent two days traveling through the Marriott from room to room, sitting in on different sessions and taking notes and tips from professionals across the nation. Both staffs were eager to soak up whatever information they could in order to better HSE’s student medias.

The JEA/NSPA Convention is held twice a year, once in the fall and again in the spring. This year, due to late registration and since the fall convention took place in Indianapolis, the staff members that went did not spend the night in a hotel. Instead, they rose bright and early both days, taking a bus ride downtown. There they spent their day to learning how to perfect their journalistic writing skills, ways to manage small staffs, and command photography and cinematic skills as well as editing and design.

Both staffs brought home information that they plan to apply to HSE News in order to benefit it in any way they can. Whether it be through monthly dodgeball games to help relieve stress come deadline day, or covering controversial national topics in a respectful manner that will reach out to the student body, the JEA/NSPA Convention provided handfuls of tips and tricks to HSE’s student media staffs.
