SSN: Remi Sylvester Athlete Feature

Remi Sylvester is a 10th grade JV soccer player here at HSE. What makes Remi different from the rest of our sophomore class? Remi comes all the way from London. Born and raised in the UK, Remi at an early age found his love for soccer. Remi has played soccer his whole life. Last year, Remi decided to join the Royals soccer team. In this article, Remi discusses the hardships of playing a sport in a new country, adapting to the US, and some cultural differences he has experienced.

 

Coming from London, Remi saw the competitiveness that ties with about every sport in the US. “The atmosphere and the intensity is much higher,” he says. Remi has a big passion for soccer and competing that does not go unnoticed by his teammates. Remi’s teammate, 9th grader Ramiere Johnson says, “he (Remi) really cares for his teammates, helps our team, and is a cool friend.” It is no secret that Remi makes a big contribution to his team and knows how to channel his energy in the field and for his team.

Despite the cultural differences and new atmosphere, Remi has adapted well. “I made new connections and new friends and I’ve learned how to play soccer in a different way.” When asked if he would rather play in the US or UK Remi replies, “The US because of the scholarships and the opportunities” Remi plans to play for the remainder of his high school career and hopes to receive a scholarship for soccer.
