Black History Month Feature: Mrs. Rhonda St. Hilare

I migrated to the US from Trinidad & Tobago (an island in the Caribbean, and a former British colony) 10 years ago. In my home country, blacks are in the majority so there was never any Black History month or any other special recognition of the ‘black experience’.

As a matter of fact, I always joke that I have only been ‘black’ for 10 years, because back home, we were identified as Trinidadians- not by race or ethnicity.

Honestly, I cannot say that I really identify with the experiences of Black Americans, so I don’t regard the emphasis on Black History month with any special interest. I am always willing to give support where I can, and I admire the efforts to recognize outstanding people of color during this month.
