Boys Track and Field Gunning for Gold

The Royals Boys Track and Field team began their season March 6th at the HCC indoor meet. The Royals won the conference meet coming in first place, without winning first in any individual races. The Royals had a total of 96 points and winning the meet by 5 points.

Sophomore Riley Schamp says that he felt “somewhat overwhelmed, seeing a lot of juniors and seniors that [he’s]looked up to these past seasons and realizing [he] can be right up there with them.” Said Schamp. “I’m excited for the rest of the season, there’s got to be some guys out there who will see my times soon. At the end of the day, I’m going to let God guide me through this next season.” Explained Schamp. As the season continues Schamp continues to set personal records and is making his mark on the track. Schamp recently set a new personal best with a time of 9:37.52 in the 3200-meter run.

The Royals held the Blue and White Relay’s at Anderson University on March 16th. The Royals finished with a productive day, as they advanced many different relays, and individuals the HSR [Hoosier State Relays] March. The boys 4 by 4 hundred relay team showed their dominance as they came out in first, running a time of 3:24.17 breaking the Hamilton Southeastern previous indoor school record in that event.

Senior 400 hundred runner Hunter Hoeft said “[he] did really well in his second meet ever, I was really eager to hear my time ” said Hoeft. He begins to earn himself a spot on the varsity roster, after battling injury his junior season, Hoeft was unable to run missing his Junior season Hoeft looks to hugely impact the Royals track team within his final year.

Senior Michael Griffith made his first appearance on the track as he ran the 4 by 4 hundred.  Griffith said that the race “confirmed our belief that we can do something great,” said Griffith. “Looking onto the outdoor season I know we can do something great.” explained Griffith.

Junior Christian Ortiz said that he was “excited our relay team ran a good time, knowing it would make us higher,” said Ortiz. “and it put me in a good mindset, knowing what has to be done for the rest of the season, after realizing we broke the indoor record we know what we can do during the outdoor season” explained Ortiz

As of this story, the Royals are ranked at second in the state as a team overall, as well as the boys 4 x 4 is ranked second in the state. The Royals plan to continue their dominance all the way through the outdoor season and finally make a name for themselves, as none of the rankings listed Hamilton Southeastern in them. The boys team prepares for the HSR (Hoosier State relays) on March 23 in hopes to bring home a state title.
