Celebrities Influence in Politics

Celebrities seem to dictate our lives and our opinions because of their social status. They are often seen as more important of an individual than those who are not famous. Their status seems to influence and persuade their fans opinions and beliefs; especially in politics.

Famous people use their social media platforms to advocate for their beliefs. Actress and singer, Miley Cyrus is active in politics through her Instagram and Twitter. Cyrus has posted several photos regarding recent events such as the Parkland Shooting and the Las Vegas shooting. Cyrus works with the company, Happy Hippie to spread happiness, equality and support. Mar. 24., Cyrus sang her popular song, The Climb, in support of stricter gun laws.

Similar to Cyrus, G-Eazy has a concert scheduled in Washington D.C to advocate for stricter gun laws Mar. 24. Through this concert, fans will gather to hear his music while also petitioning for new laws to be put in place.

Sophia Bush, an actress most famous for her role in One Tree Hill and Chicago PD, is an active spokeswoman for feminism and human rights through her Instagram platform. Bush posts opportunities for women who have been abused and she advocates for the Me Too campaign.

“I want every little girl who is told she is bossy to be told instead that she has leadership skills,” Bush said.

Throughout the previous election, celebrities such as Beyoncé advocated for Hillary Clinton through her social media as well as a concert. Beyoncé posted on Instagram a video saying, “I’m with Her.” However, it is impossible to calculate how many votes Beyoncé swayed.

“It’s impossible to directly measure how many votes an Instagram video of Beyoncé telling people ‘I’m with her’ yielded,” Vanity Fair wrote. “Even if it racked up 2.2 million views on Election Day.”

While other celebrities such as Willie Robertson, the star of A&E’s show Duck Dynasty, was a strong supporter of now President Donald Trump. He was at a Trump Rally this past Oct., officially declared his support in Jan. and then spoke at the Republican National Conference on President Trump’s behalf.

“Let me tell you why I’ve been on the Trump train from the beginning,” Robertson said. “If you’re looking for a job or trying to grow a business like I am, Donald Trump will have your back.”
